Tell the Story – Myths and Spiritual

Charles Allis Art Museum

A hands-on workshop in conjunction with the exhibition Journey From the Secular to the Spiritual: Works by George McCormick, Sr. Children will be invited to explore personal journeys through their own designs, drawings and collages. By the end of the workshop, participants will have learned to see a connection between setting, style and history in the work of McCormick. They will have been introduced to various styles; learned to use different art materials, both drawing and collage, to create their unique vision; developed hand-eye coordination; and learned the skills of working with art to express feeling and interpret and create narrative designs. The World in Black and White

Charles Allis Art Museum

A hands-on workshop in conjunction with the exhibition, At a Moment’s Notice: Photographs by John Heymann. Children will be invited to explore the contrasts of light and shadow, as well as spatial relationships between objects through drawing using black and white as the color palette. Inspired by the work of Heymann, participants will use the permanent collection of the Charles Allis as the subject of their art. By the end of this workshop, children will have learned to see how working in black and white shows the contrasts of light and shadow, how spatial relationships are emphasized and how unexpected patterns and forms in our ever-changing environment are revealed. Participants will leave with a fuller understanding of the use of light and shadow within their own black and white creations.

Sundays, October 19, October 26 and November 2, from 1-3:30 p.m.

Travel Sketchbook and Journal – Drawing on the Way

Charles Allis Art Museum

In conjunction with the exhibition Big and Little: Paintings by Susan Diehl, this hands-on workshop is for those who are planning to travel to local destinations as well as far off locations. Participants will get the feel of sketching and painting on location. Diehl’s work, in which she recreates little moments of reality, will provide the influence for participants. Children will learn to be prepared to capture trips and memories in sketches to look fondly back on for years to come. By the end of the course, participants will have developed skills in drawing with pencil, pen, ink and watercolor rendering. They will have applied these skills to depicting architecture and vegetation in small format works. They will have been given ideas for creating their own portable traveling studio.
